The business problem
Business teams historically depended on the data team for Tableau reports, and comparable requests could take roughly two weeks. That created a bottleneck between the question a business stakeholder needed answered and the insight available to support a decision.
My role and approach
I architected a data-virtualization layer and selected a vendor with a business-logic and semantic layer, enabling teams to query data conversationally and create custom dashboards with less dependence on centralized reporting.
- Understood the reporting bottleneck and the need for trusted, reusable business definitions.
- Architected a data-virtualization approach and evaluated vendor fit.
- Introduced a semantic layer to support consistent business logic.
- Shifted the operating model toward governed self-service rather than simply adding a chat interface.
Outcome and value
The solution enabled business teams to access trusted insights and create dashboards without waiting for every request. A quantified post-implementation improvement was not provided.
How success should be measured
Proposed targets such as reducing turnaround from two weeks to one to three days should be treated as targets until measured against comparable requests. Conversational analytics is useful only when answers are accurate, secure, and grounded in agreed definitions.
